Exclusive: Neighbours' Jacinta Stapleton discusses Amy and Shane's romance

From Digital Spy

Neighbours spoilers follow for UK viewers.

Neighbours star Jacinta Stapleton has spoken to Digital Spy about the surprising romantic connection on the way for her character Amy Greenwood and newly-single Shane Rebecchi.

Next week's episodes on Channel 5 see Amy start to grow closer to Shane (Nicholas Coghlan) as the Ramsay Street residents celebrate Christmas.

In a chat with Digital Spy, Jacinta explained that Amy doesn't realise she could be standing in the way of a possible reunion for Shane and his estranged wife Dipi (Sharon Johal).

Just as Dipi is starting to warm to the idea of reuniting with Shane, he leaves her shellshocked by revealing that he has shared a kiss with Amy.

Speaking to Digital Spy about the storyline, Jacinta explained: "Shane has been very supportive of Amy since she told him about how she doesn't own the rights to the uniforms she wants to design for Lassiters.

"They spark up a nice friendship from that and he's really helpful through the whole process. They do start to get a little bit more intimate after that.

"Amy actually asks Shane about Dipi and he tells her that it's okay. You can only believe the information that someone tells you.

"Shane is pretty confident that him and Dipi are over, so I think Amy just goes for it because that's the information she's been told."

She continued: "It was really great working with Nicholas on the storyline because he's just such a great actor and we speak the same language. I worked with him pretty heavily and we have the same philosophy on work and everything."

Jacinta played the role of Amy as a Neighbours regular between 1997 and 2000. She returned for a cameo appearance in the 20th anniversary in 2005 and is now back on screen for a longer guest stint.

Revealing the story behind her comeback, Jacinta told us: "I've always really loved the character of Amy. She was so fun to play back in the day and she's always had a special place in my heart.

"Going back to play her again after so many years was really special and not many actors get a chance to do that.

"Honestly, returning didn't occur to me until I bumped into Jackie Woodburne and one of the show's producers at the funeral of a director from Neighbours. That's how the idea came up.

"When it was decided I was coming back, I watched old footage. They gave me four or five episodes, which was just a trip to watch! I can't believe how young I was! I felt like an adult back then but I looked at the footage and thought: 'Oh no, I was a child!'

"Amy is very frenetic, so it's exciting to play her and really joyous because she's so upbeat. But it's nice, because you do have moments where you see her vulnerability as well."

Discussing her memories of Neighbours from the '90s, Jacinta continued: "I remember that it was just so fun. Some of my favourite memories would be the Full Monty and the fun storylines.

"I came over to England and I just didn't realise how massive Neighbours was. I remember getting a photo with one of those mime artists on the street, then the whole crowd turned around to me and started chasing me down the street!"

Asked whether she'd be interested in a permanent comeback, Jacinta replied: "I just think never say never. I've learned that from this time, because I didn't think I'd be back. You never know."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
