An interview with Dakota Johnson on Ellen DeGeneres‘s show has gone viral over an awkward conversation about birthday parties between the two stars.

Shortly after the Peanut Butter Falcon star had taken a seat, talk turned to the fact that she had recently turned 30, and DeGeneres claimed she had not been invited to the party.

Johnson’s demeanour seemed rather frosty as she responded: “Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen, you were invited. No, last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of s**t about not inviting you, but I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited.”

“Well, who wouldn’t want to be invited to a party?” DeGeneres responded.

“But I didn’t even know you liked me,” Johnson protested, to which DeGeneres insisted Johnson had to have known she liked her because she had appeared on Ellen a number of times.

“But I did invite you, and you didn’t come,” Johnson said, prompting a back and forth that led to DeGeneres’s producer being asked. He told DeGeneres: “You were out of town.”

“Oh yeah, I had that thing,” DeGeneres said.

Fans on social media worked out that Johnson’s party in Malibu had taken place on Saturday 5 October. The following day, DeGeneres was spotted in a now-infamous picture with former US president George W Bush at the Dallas Cowboys vs Green Bay Packers game in Arlington, Texas.

Johnson has a history of calling out TV hosts, it was pointed out, such as when she asked Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon: “Aren’t you supposed to let people talk on this show?” after he repeatedly interrupted her.
