The Exorcist: Believer confirms runtime and ratingUniversal

The Exorcist: Believer, a direct sequel to William Friedkin's 1973 seminal horror, has received a 15 rating from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

The upcoming movie, which has been rated R in the US, has also been confirmed to close in at 111 minutes — only 21 minutes shorter than Friedkin's nightmare-inducing cut featuring Regan's infamous spider walk scene.

Directed by Halloween's David Gordon Green, The Exorcist: Believer is set to focus on two school friends played by Lidya Jewett and Olivia Marcum. According to the official synopsis, the girls "find themselves possessed after disappearing for several days, before starting to display several horrifying symptoms that see them staring dead-eyed in the mirror and storming into church services".

Believer stars Leslie Odom Jr as protagonist Victor Fielding, with Ann Dowd, Jennifer Nettles, Okwui Okpokwasili and Raphael Sbarge rounding out the cast.

Coming 50 years after The Exorcist first terrorised moviegoers and wowed critics, the sequel also sees Ellen Burstyn reprise the role of Chris MacNeil, aka Regan's mum, from the original film.

Chris comes into the picture when the parents of the two possessed girls decide to enlist the help of someone who's gone through such horrific events before.

Produced by Jason Blum of Blumhouse, the new film partly alters the events of previous sequels Exorcist II: The Heretic and The Exorcist III, though Green explained those follow-ups will still be canon in the possession saga.

"I like all the Exorcist movies. And not only do I like them, I think they can all fall into the acceptable mythology for what I'm doing," the filmmaker told Total Film in July.

The Exorcist: Believer will be released in US cinemas on October 6 and in UK cinemas on October 13.
