SINGAPORE — A man who could not afford paid sex passed himself off as a social escort agent who had to take nude photos and "test" the sexual abilities of the social escorts under him.

De Beers Wong Tian Jun, 39, cheated at least 11 women, aged 18 to 24, between April 2015 and January 2016 by representing himself as an agent for wealthy clients when the victims contacted him through his advertisement.

To pique their interest, Wong would claim that he could pay potential sugar babies $8,000 to $24,000 per month, but that they had to send him nude photos and have sex with him before they met actual clients.

On Thursday (18 March), Wong admitted to 10 out of 36 charges involving cheating, criminal intimidation, and taking obscene films, with the remaining to be taken into consideration for his sentencing.

Wong, a Singaporean, came up with an idea to advertise on Locanto for “sugar babes” in 2015. He falsely represented that he was “a freelance agent” that “provide[d] sugarbabes to [his] well to do clients”, and stated “if you are serious about earning good money I have the clients for you!”

To those who contacted him, Wong said that in order to secure a sugar daddy, they had to send nude photos, have nude photos taken, and have sex with him so that the victims could be "evaluated" by his clients.

'All my girls take skimpy photos': accused

In October 2015, a 24-year-old woman contacted Wong, who told her she could earn between $10,000 and $20,000 a month. While initially reluctant to send compromising images of herself to Wong, she did so after Wong told her “all my girls take skimpy pics so you will be on a losing end”.

He also told her that she would have to settle for “lower paying clients” if she did not engage in sexual activity with him first. He lied that he had a client travelling to Singapore in a few days who was keen to meet her and who paid his last sugar babe $16,000.

On 18 October 2015, the two met at Hotel 81 Kovan where Wong managed to manipulate the unwilling woman into engaging in a nude photoshoot and having unprotected sex with him. The woman agreed to the sex act as she believed Wong was testing her out for his clients.

Over the next few days, Wong tried to persuade the woman to meet him again, lying that his phone crashed and that he lost all her photos. When she did not respond, he said that he would give her client to another sugar baby.

He forwarded screenshots of what appeared to be conversations between himself and the potential client, to show that he was unable to answer the "client" on how good the woman was at sex. The woman never met Wong again.

A few months later, on 30 January 2016, the woman begged the man to delete her nudes. Wong only said that he would delete them if the woman agreed to provide sexual services to him.

When the woman said that she was doing Wong a favour by not going to the police, Wong replied, “now I have to pass your photos to my friends in case anything happen to me they will use the photos as they wish”.

The woman filed a police report a few days later on February 2016. After the offence came to light, the victim was diagnosed with adjustment disorder.

Another 22-year-old woman came across Wong’s sham advertisement in 2015. She agreed to meet him to take nude photographs as he promised to pay her a few hundred dollars.

The two met at Hotel 81 Kovan around 20 July 2015 and Wong used the same excuses to manipulate the woman into having sex with him. He did not pay her.

Wong met another victim, an 18-year-old woman around 5 August 2015 at the same hotel and engaged in the same sexual activities. After his lies surfaced, the woman began experiencing fear and paranoia, afraid that Wong would leak the illicit photos.

Immediately after this meeting, Wong texted the woman, "I think today rush then u (sic) cannot show me properly I think we better meet again like that I dun dare send u to my clients lei”.

He asked to meet the woman again, claiming a client had asked him to teach the woman the proper technique.

The woman, however, wanted to focus on her studies and refused to meet him. Wong threatened to sell her photos, claiming that he needed the money to cover a monetary loss, which was the woman’s fault.

Another 23-year-old woman met with Wong a second time, believing that he needed to take better nude photos of her. She also met with him later to allow him to record a video of them having sex.

Prosecutors asked for Wong to be jailed at least 30 months for his offences, citing in part the harm caused to at least 11 victims he had cheated.

“All the victims suffered harm to their mind as a result of the accused’s acts. In particular, (one victim) was diagnosed by IMH to have adjustment disorder with anxiety as a result of the offence.

“She experienced anxiety attacks after the incident, often triggered by memories of this incident. She would sometimes cry during these attacks, and these were occasionally accompanied by shortness of breath, headaches, nausea and giddiness. In addition, she began having sleeping problems and nightmares and tended to avoid going to the Kovan neighbourhood and Hotel 81,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor Cheng Yuxi and Tan Peiwei.

In mitigation, Wong's lawyer Genesa Tan said that Wong had been diagnosed with adjustment disorder, which "significantly contributed" to his offences.

She added that Wong, who worked in the financial industry, was remorseful and had saved the victims from having to testify by pleading guilty. Wong has since gone for counselling and has taken "conscientious steps to become a better person".

District Judge John Ng adjourned the sentencing to 20 April.
