Facebook Users Hoodwinked By Fake Meryl Streep Page

Don’t believe everything that gets shared on your social network, particularly when it comes to Jennifer Aniston and Meryl Streep.

For example, many readers will likely have a spotted a story doing the rounds from a certain ’Meryl L. Streep’.

It shows an old picture of the Hollywood doyenne on the New York subway, and comes with the empowering, inspirational type message stressing that it’s what’s inside that counts, reputedly from the mouth of Ms Streep herself.

But the fact that she appears to have no idea how many Oscars she’s won arouses suspicion that maybe it’s not her after all.

“This was me on my way home from an audition for King Kong where I was told I was too ‘ugly’ for the part. This was a pivotal moment for me. This one rogue opinion could derail my dreams of becoming an actress or force me to pull myself up by the boot straps and believe in myself. I took a deep breath and said 'I’m sorry you think I’m too ugly for your film but you’re just one opinion in a sea of thousands and I’m off to find a kinder tide’. Today I have 18 Academy Awards,” she says.

She’s actually only won three Oscars (Best Actress in 'Sophie’s Choice’ and 'The Iron Lady’, and Best Supporting in 'Kramer Vs. Kramer’), though she has been nominated for a massive 19 in total.

Plus, the page is a fansite, not in any way an officially endorsed affair (it’s since added the word ‘Unofficial’ to its title).

Factual issues aside, at the time of writing the post has notched up well over a million likes, and over 200,000 shares and the story itself is based in truth, so maybe that’s the important thing.

She revealed on the Graham Norton show earlier this year how movie legend Dino De Laurentiis had slighted her when she was summoned to see him for the King Kong role, which eventually went to Jessica Lange.

“It was Dino De Laurentiis Senior, and his son had seen me in a play and so I went up to the top of the ‘Gulf and Western Building, like the 33rd floor and he had this amazing office that looked all over Manhattan. I walked in and his son was in there very excited that he’d brought in this new actress.

“And the father said to his son – in Italian, because I understand Italian – he said 'brutta’, you know, 'why do you bring me this ugly thing?'”

There’s also been much online to-do about a now-viral post purportedly from Jennifer Aniston, about an encounter with a young homeless mother and baby in Vancouver, and how the ‘Friends’ star helped her reunite with her estranged parents.

Over 400,000 people have now 'liked’ this, complete with a picture of Aniston and a woman (who looks a tiny bit older that the '14 or 15’ Aniston allegedly describes in the life-affirming – if a bit humble-bragging – tale).

Aniston’s people have since denied there’s any truth in the post.

“The story on the fan page has nothing to do with Jennifer and we are not at all sure where it came from,” said a rep.

It turns out it the tale itself was taken from a Reddit post made some five years ago.

There’s a lesson here… and it’s that Jennifer Aniston sometimes hugs ladies in the street, and no one has 18 Oscars in their downstairs toilet.
