According to Variety, MacFarlane is now working with 20th Century Studios to create a reboot for the cult movie Revenge of the Nerds that was first released in 1984.
Identical twin brothers, Keith and Kenny Lucas (known for their scenes in 22 Jump Street) are set to write the script as well as star in the remake – they will be co-writing the movie with Alex Rubens who is known for writing on shows such as Key and Peele, Community and The Twilight Zone.
MacFarlane will produce through his production company Fuzzy Door alongside Erica Huggins, who will lead the movie's development. Alana Kleiman from Fuzzy Door will also serve as executive producer.
This won't be the easiest reboot to make as many of the original references in Revenge of the Nerds are highly problematic – particularly its depictions of rape.
The new movie will not be a direct reboot of the 80s version but will instead focus on nerd and geek culture in the 21st century.
The original Revenge of the Nerds was directed by Jeff Kanew and grew into a franchise – the original story focused on the lives of a group of college nerds who tried to outsmart a jock fraternity named the Alpha Betas.
In 2006, 20th Century Fox attempted to remake the movie – however, the project got cancelled after two weeks of production. Adam Brody, Kristin Cavallari and Dan Byrd were cast in this reboot.
There is currently no release date set for the newest Revenge of the Nerds movie.
