Fast 8 has been edited for UK release

‘Fast and Furious 8’ is getting more than just a name change…

UK audiences will be watching a slightly different version of ‘Fast and Furious 8’ – known as ‘The Fate of the Furious’ in the US – because it was too violent to secure a 12A certificate.

“During post-production, the distributor sought and was given advice on how to secure the desired classification. Following this advice, certain changes were made prior to submission,” reads the official BBFC entry.

“This film was originally seen for advice,” they stated. “The company was informed it was likely to be classified 15 uncut but that their preferred 12A classification could be achieved by reducing one scene of violence.”

Which scene was cut down?

At the moment, we have no idea… but we might not be able to tell, anyway.

“When the film was submitted for formal classification, that moment of violence had been acceptably reduced and the film was classified 12A.”

Considering that the scene made it into the final film, it’s likely that the cut simply reduced the level of violence portrayed on screen, shifting the focus elsewhere. But since the scene in question is still intact, it’s unlikely to have affected the storyline in any significant way.

Why were they so keen to get the cut?

Well, it’s a smart move, considering the franchise…

Ever since ‘The Fast and the Furious’ back in 2001, every single instalment of the high-octane franchise has been classified as a 12A. Clearly, this reaches the widest possible audience while still keeping the tone of the film intact… and it would be a shame to shift upwards to a 15 rating at this stage.

Still, it would be interesting to know which scene was cut back.
