From Digital Spy

Fast & Furious 7 surprised everyone when it became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time in 2015, which obviously means an eighth instalment is on its way. And a ninth. And a tenth. The world can't get enough of Dominic Toretto and his multi-cultural gang, who have grown from simple street racers to heist kings in a Mission: Impossible-Ocean's Eleven hybrid.

Fast 8 will be released in the UK on Wednesday, April 12, followed in the USA on April 14, but fans are already searching for the latest updates. So here's everything we know so far, with the newest information right at the top...

Fast 8 trailer:

The first Fast 8 trailer debuted on December 11, which was early on Monday, December 12 in the UK, as the film took over New York City's Times Square for the trailer launch that was streamed around the world.

And here's the second explosive trailer, in which Dwayne Johnson takes on a ruddy TORPEDO:

And here's the smaller teaser, aired during the Super Bowl on February 6:

And there has also been another teaser on Twitter:

Ahead of the trailer's release, Vin and his castmates looked back on the blockbuster movie series' history and previewed their "most ambitious and most entertaining" sequel in a featurette that's rather emotional:

And here's a bonus featurette including most of the cast:

Straight Outta Compton's F Gary Gray will direct

After speculation that Vin Diesel himself may step up and direct the eighth instalment, it was revealed in October 2015 that F Gary Gray has signed up to be the top man.

Riding high off the success of his NWA biopic box office smash, the director revealed that he will succeed James Wan. Gray has had action experience before, having helmed The Italian Job, A Man Apart and The Negotiator. Plus, the video for OutKast's 'Ms Jackson'.

It's got a new name

Just to make things more confusing, at first Vin Diesel confirmed that the latest film will be called Fast 8. This follows Furious 7, Fast & Furious 6, Fast Five and so on. Vin clearly can't stick to a single title for this franchise.

However, the UK will make things a tad easier by calling it Fast & Furious 8.

But that was until December 9, when its official Twitter page revealed it will now be called The Fate of the Furious. Surely it should be The F8 of the Furious?

Fast 8 plot: Is the family over?

The first full trailer revealed how Dominic Toretto... shock horror... appears to betray his family by teaming up with new villain Cypher (Charlize Theron).

The trailer shows him running Hobbs off the road (sending him to jail in the process), before Kurt Russell's Mr Nobody releases him AND fellow inmate Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) to help hunt down Dom and find out what the hell's going on.

He's even making Letty jealous by having a cheeky snog with Cypher. But surely, not everything is as it seems?

Here's the official synopsis:

'On the heels of 2015's Furious 7, one of the fastest movies to reach $1 billion worldwide in box-office history and the sixth-biggest global title of all time, comes the newest chapter in one of the most popular and enduring motion-picture serials of all time: The Fate of the Furious."

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game-and the rest of the crew has been exonerated-the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can't seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world's stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.'

Fast & Furious spoilers - big reveals in the first music video

G-Eazy and Kehlani's team-up on the track 'Good Life' features brand new footage from The Fate of the Furious. including the rather epic shot of Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham smiling at each other. We're not sure we've EVER seen The Stath smile like that before.

Granted, there's a small chance that the shot is actually from the blooper real, but if it isn't, then that's quite a shocking moment considering that Johnson's Hobbs and Statham's Deckard Shaw are fierce enemies. We know that Shaw is forced to join up with the crew to take down Charlize Theron's Cypher, but will he be joining the familia full time?

There are also shots of a seemingly happy Dom (Vin Diesel) having some fast fun with wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez). Does this take place before Dom seemingly betrays his family, or is it after everything's okay again?

We also see brief shots of Scott Eastwood's character chilling with the crew (and sitting next to Hobbs's daughter Samantha) and driving a supercar, while Kurt Russell's Frank Petty is also having a grand old time - with Shaw as one of their mates like everything is totally fine and he didn't kill Han - see some screengrabs below:

Fast & Furious 8 release date: It will kick off "one last" trilogy of films

Vin Diesel revealed to his fans on Facebook that Furious 8 intends to begin a new trilogy of films, that will ultimately end the franchise altogether with Furious 10.

He said: "Universal has been so good to me and so trusting of the vision… they have been like family… I promised the studio I would deliver one last Trilogy to end the saga."

With Furious 7 concluding Brian O'Conner's story arc and introducing Kurt Russell's Mr Nobody, it's fair to predict that the new trilogy will focus on Dom's team being set new challenges each time.

9 will be released April 19, 2019 and 10 will follow on April 2, 2021.

Fast & Furious 8 cast: Scott Eastwood signs up

Clint's son Scott has officially joined the cast as a new character that works alongside Kurt Russell's Mr Nobody.

Scott posted an emotional tribute to Paul Walker after his casting was announced, explaining that the two were close friends for years:

Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw will terrorise Dominic once again

Thought that was the last we'd see of The Stath? Think again! He said in June: "We're already talking about doing another one, part eight, and I'm a newcomer. I just got invited to the party in this last one, so it's nice to know that I'll be doing another."

Deckard was last seen being placed in a high-security jail by Hobbs, but he clearly didn't intend on staying there. But this time, he's teaming up with the crew rather than trying to kill them.

Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs will be back

Due to The Rock's ridiculously busy schedule, there were doubts that he would be back for another film, having arguably rescued the franchise with his debut in Fast Five.

However, he has put those doubts to rest, saying: "Of course. It can't go on without Hobbs!"

Dwayne has also expressed a huge interest in making a solo Hobbs movie, saying: "We all are interested in it. I just had a big conversation with the studio. So we'll see. I still think for me personally we've created a little bit of space for him in 7 and the gauge is set for what the audience will want." This was later confirmed to still be in the works in late May.

The actor has posted several photos of himself as Hobbs from the movie, teasing that he aims to "disrupt the franchise" and heavily implying that Hobbs might not be on the right side of the law this time around.

Helen Mirren will show how furious she can be

At first, we passed this off as a silly quote from an interview, but lo and behold, it's actually happening! Could she be Jason Statham's angry mum?

In March 2015, Mirren said: "I so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie. My claim to fame is I always do my own driving. I was on Top Gear, and I did [my lap] in a very good time. I keep putting it out there, and they never ask me. I'll be in Fast and Furious 8!"

However, she sadly won't be seen driving in the film. "I wanted to be driving, but unfortunately, I'm not," she told Entertainment Weekly, quipping: "Maybe that will come in the future, in Fast and Furious 12."

Along with Mirren, it has been rumoured that Ruby Rose and Cara Delevingne have been courted for villainous roles. Again, this hasn't been confirmed but it could make things very interesting.

Best of all, Charlize Theron has been officially confirmed to be joining the cast as one of the film's main villains. Clearly, her Mad Max: Fury Road appearance was one hell of an audition. She will be playing a character named Cipher, who has been described as a Hannibal Lecter-type villain (minus the cannibalism). Here's a first-look photo:

Meanwhile, Ronda Rousey has also been tipped to make a return after her brief role in Furious 7, along with fellow UFC fighter Joanna Jędrzejczyk.

Will Lucas Black drift back in?

One of the nerdy highlights of 7 was seeing Tokyo Drift lead Black's Sean Boswell return (despite looking 8 years older between scenes). When he first signed up, he apparently committed to three instalments, so hopefully Sean will be back.

Sadly, Lucas Black has confirmed that he will not be appearing in the eighth film due to scheduling conflicts with NCIS: New Orleans, which kinda sucks. But he said that he still hopes to return in the ninth instalment. Listen to his interview with Chris Mannix below:

With Brian O'Conner leaving the series, Sean would be the perfect character to take his place as Vin's right-hand man. He is a brilliant driver, and has Brian's style and sass. But we haven't seen him in any press shots yet, so if he is in the film, it might just be another cameo, if that.

Who else will be back?

Aside from Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Kurt Russell and Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez (Letty), Tyrese Gibson (Roman) and Ludacris (Tej) will also be back.

With Brian's departure, it will be tricky to fit in Mia (Jordana Brewster) without explaining why he isn't there, but maybe she'll get a cameo or brief scene.

Meanwhile, Nathalie Emmanuel is definitely back as Ramsey, while Elena (Elsa Pataky) also makes a return.

Who else has joined the cast?

One of the new main cast members of the eighth movie is none other than Game of Thrones star Kristofer Hivju, better known as Tormund from the HBO fantasy drama. He will be playing a villainous tough man on Charlize Theron's side.

Here he is getting stuck into the action and loving it:

Will Eva Mendes make a long-awaited return?

Inside sources have claimed that Mendes may make a comeback in Furious 8 as agent Monica Fuentes. But this has yet to be officially confirmed.

Monica was a main character in 2 Fast 2 Furious, but made a post-credits cameo in Fast Five. Reports claim that she might team up with Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Dom (Vin Diesel) to take on a new villain in New York.

Could Paul Walker's Brian still feature?

Following the sad passing of co-lead star Paul Walker, his character Brian O'Conner was written out of the story at the end of 7. It's assumed that Brian will not be coming back, though there's always a chance that he will be referenced as if he is still there in the background.

Paul's brothers Cody and Caleb Walker helped shoot scenes involving Brian for 7, and there has since been rumours that Cody could debut as Brian's younger brother. However, Universal has since confirmed that Cody will not return for the eighth film.

However, now Paul's brothers have hinted that a future Fast & Furious movie could bring back Brian - presumably using CGI.

"I had a phone call with Vin for about an hour and we really discussed this a while back. He wanted [our] blessing," Caleb told Entertainment Tonight. "[Vin asked if it] would be acceptable to maybe bring Paul's character back... to really kind of let his fans know he's still out there."

His brother Cody added: "Universal wants to make sure to be respectful of Paul and his image too, and his family."

Could Han make a surprise comeback?

Talking to Slash Film, series writer Chris Morgan – who has worked on every film since Tokyo Drift – has hinted that Han, played by Sung Kang, could well return to the epic action saga.

"I've actually been thinking about that a lot," he teased. "I guess we'll just have to wait and find out. I love Sung – he's one of my favourite people on the planet."

Han has the dubious honour of being killed off twice already in the series, after being offed in Tokyo Drift in an explosion.

He then returned in Fast & Furious as the series went back in time, before his death was retrofitted by having Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw be the cause of the explosion during Fast & Furious 6's post-credits scene. Han's death provided the catalyst for Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto to seek revenge on Deckard Shaw in Fast & Furious 7.

If Han did somehow survive the fireball (which we very much doubt), he wouldn't be the first character to come back from the dead, after Michelle Rodriguez's Letty returned after being killed off. It's more likely that Han will be involved in a flashback if he were ever to make another appearance in the series.

Fast and Furious feud: Is there bad blood among the cast?

Apparently, though we're hoping it's all for publicity in some way. Dwayne Johnson hit out at unnamed male co-stars during his final week of shooting in early August.

While he gave props to his female colleagues, he said the guys were "a different story" - calling some of the actors "chicken shit" and "candy asses".

It sparked a reply from Tyrese Gibson who suggested that Rocky should have named names, while internet sleuths all pointed the finger at Vin Diesel for some reason.

But the feud apparently seemed to simmer down a day later, when Dwayne posted an update via a video on his Facebook and Instagram accounts about behind-the-scenes "family conflict":

He wrote: "You guys reading this know how much I believe in the idea of TEAM EFFORT. That means respecting every person, their time and their value when they step on to my set or partner with our production company.

"And like with any team - that's a family - there's gonna be conflict. Family is gonna have differences of opinion and fundamental core beliefs. To me, conflict can be a good thing, when it's followed by great resolution. I was raised on healthy conflict and welcome it.

"And like any family, we get better from it. At the end of the day me and #F8 co-stars all agree on the most important thing: Delivering an incredible movie to the world."

Other folks have suggested that the whole thing could be a build-up to a fight at next year's Wrestlemania 33, which takes place soon before Fast 8's release in April.

Fast 8 photos and videos: Are there any teasers?

Yep! Director F Gary Gray and Vin Diesel regularly post updates from the set, including several goodies such as cast reunions, filming teasers and stunt tests. - take a look at this lot:

Fast & Furious 8 cars: What will Dom and his crew drive?

On June 13, vehicle coordinator Dennis McCarthy hosted a Facebook Live video, in which he walked fans through a huge collection of ridiculously expensive cars from all over the place:

"What we're doing here today is setting up what we refer to as the Automotive Valhalla," McCarthy said. "It's basically what I feel is probably the coolest cars we've put together for one scene, and it's without a doubt the most expensive collection of vehicles we ever put in one place."

McCarthy reckons that the full cost of the cars in the garage alone total around $17 million (£12 million). And these aren't the only vehicles used in the movie.

Among the collection includes:

  • 1929 Ford Rat Rod

  • McLaren 675LT

  • Speedkore Kuda

  • Twin Turbo Lamborghini

  • Ferrari F430

  • Rolls-Royce Wraith

  • 1956 Chevy Bel-Air

  • Nissan IDx

In January, Vin Diesel posted a live YouTube video, discussing the new movie. In the background, fans were able to spot a few sports cars, including two Dodge Challenger Demons.

With car fans excited about the unveiling of the new Dodge vehicle, it would be an amazing time to debut it if it showed up in the film first.

Fast & Furious locations: It will be set in New York

Vin Diesel has confirmed that the eighth film will hit the Big Apple for the first time, having previously travelled everywhere from London to Dubai.

He explained in April that Kurt Russell's character Mr Nobody was originally hired "for a story that follows this, that takes place in New York". We're not quite sure how fast they can get on the busy streets of New York, but that's by the by!

It will also take place in Cuba

Fast & Furious 8 is expected be the first major Hollywood movie to be filmed there since the 1960s.

With the US having started 'normalising' relations with the island country last year, Universal told THR that it is "currently in the process seeking approval" from the Cuba and US governments to film a segment of the movie there.

The filmmakers are also exploring locations including Russia and Iceland. Previous instalments have taken the cast from Los Angeles and London to Tokyo and Abu Dhabi.

F Gary Gray says it will be inspired by Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The director has said that he looks to follow Star Wars 7 director JJ Abrams's style of bringing both great action and a compelling story to the mix for his first film in the Fast & Furious saga.

"When you look at someone like JJ Abrams who gives you the spectacle and great action set pieces but also gives you character and plotting and narrative, I think it's my job – and my intention – to do both," he told Collider.

"You amp up everything, you work on the performances, you work on the story, you work on the action; it's just not one thing. Hopefully I bring more to it, that's part of the point is to bring something different to the franchise while still satisfying what the fans want."
