Lewis Hamilton has been hit with a five-second penalty by the FIA for causing a collision with Oscar Piastri during the Italian Grand Prix.

The seven-time World Champion collided with the McLaren rookie while under braking after Curva Grande, which caused hefty damage to the Australian’s front wing and forced him into the pits.

It was the second five-second punishment given to Mercedes during the Italian Grand Prix, with George Russell having been given the same penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage while defending against Esteban Ocon at the Rettifilo Chicane after leaving the pits.

Hamilton was looking to make his way through the field on medium tyres and moved alongside Piastri through Curva Grande, but the pair tagged wheels under braking for the Roggia Chicane – sending both drivers into the escape road.

The stewards immediately investigated Hamilton for causing a collision, and punished him with a five-second time penalty for when he crossed the finish line.

Having moved past Piastri, the Mercedes driver was able to get by Lando Norris and Alex Albon for sixth on the road – with a race against time for him to pull out a five-second gap over the Williams driver come the chequered flag to ensure he held onto that placing.

With a softer tyre compound, he duly did so with several laps of pushing his Mercedes W14 to the limit in the closing stages of the Italian Grand Prix, eventually finishing 7.4 seconds ahead of Albon come the finish.

Hamilton was able to hold on to his place in the top six on Sunday, while Max Verstappen went on to win his 10th race in a row – a new Formula 1 record – heading a Red Bull 1-2 at Monza.
