First Jem and The Holograms Movie Trailer Is Truly Outrageous
Unless you’re a child of the 80s, the nostalgic thrill of a live action ‘Jem and The Holograms’ movie is likely to pass you by.
However, the first trailer for Jon M. Chu’s live action remake has arrived and it looks like it could capture the hearts of a new generation of tweens as well as its many older fans. Watch it above.
The original cartoon, produced by toymakers Hasbro and the animation team behind ‘Transformers’, ran for 65 episodes from 1985-1988 and was syndicated around the world where it became a staple of Saturday morning cartoon schedules.

The insanely catch opening theme tune (watch it here) features the truly groundbreaking lyrics: “Jem… Jem is truly outrageous. Truly, truly, truly outrageous. Woo ooo Jem… Jem. The music’s contagious.”
It told the story of Jerrica, whose alter ego was the lead singer of rock combo Jem and The Holograms, and the band’s pastel-coloured adventures in music.
The cartoon had a complicated set up that involved a holographic computer (Synergy) bequeathed to Jerrica by her dead father, that enabled to band to disguise their true identities using micro-projectors hidden in their earrings.
The group often crossed paths with two rival bands The Misfits and The Stingers while they fought to keep their identities secret and protect the Synergy at all costs.
The film looks set to ditch much of that and follow a more traditional rags-to-riches formula but with plenty of retro nods for the older fans to enjoy.
To complete the nostalgia trip, ‘The Breakfast Club’ star Molly Ringwald (above) appears in a supporting role, which can never be a bad thing.
‘Jem and The Holograms’ starring Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis is coming to UK cinemas on 21 December.
