First look at Adam Driver's new movie Megalopolis

Adam Driver has been pictured for the first time in Francis Ford Coppola's upcoming sci-fi epic Megalopolis.

The Star Wars actor will play Caesar, who can be seen surrounded by a futuristic city while looking into the distance using a strange device. According to Vanity Fair, his character is an architect and artist who is planning to rebuild the city that has fallen into ruin.

Also in the picture is The Invitation's Nathalie Emmanuel as Julia Cicero, the daughter of Caesar's nemesis, the city's mayor Frank who wants to thwart his plans (played by Giancarlo Esposito).

The star-studded ensemble cast includes Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, and Jason Schwartzman. They are joined by Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, Talia Shire, Dustin Hoffman, and D. B. Sweeney.

It will premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival on May 17, where it has been nominated for the Palme d'Or alongside David Cronenberg's The Shrouds and Yorgos Lanthimos' latest film Kinds of Kindness.

Described as "Julius Caesar meets Blade Runner", a synopsis for the film reads: "In New York, a woman, Julia Cicero, is divided between loyalties to her father, Frank, who has a classical view of society, and her architect lover, Caesar, who is more progressive and ready for the future. He wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster."

Megalopolis has been a passion project more than 40 years in the making for Coppola, who first had the idea for the project in 1979 before actively entering the development stage in 1983.

It has been delayed and cancelled several times since then, before being kickstarted once more in 2019. The film follows 2011's Twixt, ending the longest gap between releases in Coppola's career.

Explaining why the film has taken so long to come to fruition, Coppola told Vanity Fair: " I wasn’t really working on this screenplay for 40 years as I often see written, but rather I was collecting notes and clippings for a scrapbook of things I found interesting for some future screenplay, or examples of political cartoons or different historical subjects.

"Ultimately, after a lot of time, I settled on the idea of a Roman epic. And then later, a Roman epic set in modern America, so I really only began writing this script, on and off, in the last dozen years or so. Also, as I have made many films of many different subjects and in many different styles, I hoped for a project later in life when I might better understand what my personal style was."

Megalopolis will premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2024.
