First look at Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in new Frankenstein movie

Maggie Gyllenhaal has shared a first look at Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in her new Frankenstein movie.

The film, which has now been titled The Bride, is a new spin on Mary Shelley's classic story and the iconic Frankenstein lore.

Director Gyllenhaal posted a series of images on her Instagram of a camera test during filming, which shows Bale and Buckley in action as the film's central characters – Frankenstein's monster and the eponymous bride.

The two actors are transformed for their roles in these eerie black and white photos, particularly Bale, who recently shaved his hair off ahead of the start of production on the movie.

The Bride was originally being made for Netflix but has now found a home at Warner Bros, and Variety reports that it is set to be released in cinemas on October 2, 2025.

The synopsis for the film reads: "A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two invigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born.

"She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement."

Also starring in The Bride are Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard and Annette Benning, with Joker cinematographer Lawrence Sher also on board.

Last month, Buckley told IndieWire that the film was about to start filming, and she praised getting to reunite with director Gyllenhaal, who she previously worked with on 2021 movie The Lost Daughter.

She said: "I feel so grateful that I get to be part of a coin of extraordinary women who have so much to say, such brilliant minds, and such imagination.

"It is beyond my wildest dreams getting to go back and work with [Gyllenhaal] again. We really fell in love working on The Lost Daughter."

Gyllenhaal has also worked with co-star Bale previously. She played Rachel Dawes opposite Bale's Batman in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.

The Bride is set to be released in cinemas on October 2, 2025.
