First look at Cillian Murphy in Netflix's Peaky Blinders movie
Netflix has shared a first-look image of Cillian Murphy reprising the role of Tommy Shelby for the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie.
A direct sequel to the series, the film is set a few years after the events of the season six finale, following the Shelbys during World War II. The streamer confirmed production on the movie has begun, also giving fans a sneak peek of its protagonist.
In the newly released images, Murphy stands in profile against a brick wall, sporting greyer hair as Tommy. A second snap sees the Oppenheimer star posing on set with the show's creator Steven Knight, who also wrote and produced the movie.

"By order of the Peaky Blinders... Tommy Shelby is back," Netflix captioned the post. "Cillian Murphy and Steven Knight are reunited on set as production officially starts on the upcoming Netflix film."
It's been announced that Murphy is joined by Marvel's Tim Roth, with the ensemble rounded out by previously announced stars Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan. More cast members are also expected to be revealed in due course.
Given its war setting, the movie may be tapping into Tommy Shelby's traumatic past as a sergeant major in the First World War, which left him with nightmares and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it hasn't been clarified whether Tommy will have any direct involvement in the conflict.

As for Knight, he teased that the war story will be told the Peaky Blinders way.
"I'm thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II," he said in a statement. "The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders."
The film is directed by Tom Harper, who promised an "extraordinary" continuation of the Birmingham gang saga.
"There's a great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew," he said. "We're grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary."
There is currently no release date or title for the Peaky Blinders movie.
