Directed by BAFTA Award-winning creative Nick Hamm, the film will tell the epic tale of the eponymous 14th-century marksman, played by The Northman star Claes Bang.

The synopsis continues: "As the nations of medieval Europe struggle for power, the ruthless Austrian Empire invades Switzerland, and a peaceful huntsman, William Tell, is thrust into the heart of their resistance.

Sex Education star Swindells features as Gessler, the first officer to the king, who is in a sneak-peek image dressed in armour and carrying a sword, surrounded by his fellow knights in battle.

Speaking to Deadline, Nick Hamm explained what drove him to create the "political and moral" film.

"This is a fantastic European legend that has never been exploited cinematically and talks about some of the most prescient things that are going on," he said.

"In other words, the whole notion of individual liberty, how you conduct yourself in that situation, how you protect your own liberty against an autocratic power, how you organise yourself in that way. So, it's both political and moral and it’s a story that has existed for over 300 years."

William Tell is released in UK and Irish cinemas on January 10, 2025.
