It became one of the most-watched sporting events of all time, after the retired former Wimbledon champion Riggs, 55 at the time, claimed he could beat any woman on the court.

29-year-old world number two King took up the challenge, in front of a worldwide audience of more than 90 million people.

But the showman Riggs soon found himself having his bravado served back to him – with King beating him in straight sets, winning the $100,000 prize.

Also starring is Sarah Silverman, who plays Gladys Heldman, the founder of World Tennis magazine, who was pivotal in creating the women’s tennis circuit, organising female players who felt they were getting a raw deal being paid less than the male tennis stars.

Alan Cumming, Andrea Riseborough and Elisabeth Shue are also set to star.

Behind the camera are filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who directed Carell in the indie hit 'Little Miss Sunshine’.

The 'Battle of the Sexes’ has made for movie fodder in the past, but this will be the first theatrically-released film.
