Here Are the First Photos of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon as New 'Ghostbusters'

Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate McKinnon: They ain’t afraid of no ghosts.

The funny ladies suited up as filming began today in Boston for Paul Feig’s femme-powered Ghostbusters reboot.

Wiig was photographed on set in full professorial mode, complete with dark wig and briefcase. In between takes she was seen huddling with Feig and her co-stars.

McCarthy and McKinnon’s characters, meanwhile, seemed to be in a big hurry, lugging ghostbusting equipment, including a possible proton pack hidden in a bag on McKinnon’s back and a ghost trap in McCarthy’s hands. By the looks of McKinnon’s pants, she just survived a sliming. They were exiting a building that was dressed as a Bronx school.

Beantown is standing in for New York City, which is once again the epicenter for the supernatural. A set source tells the Boston Herald that Wiig plays a Columbia University prof discredited for believing in the paranormal — a nod to the classic 1984 film’s characters. She teams with her old pal McCarthy and fellow spook chasers McKinnon and Leslie Jones (who wasn’t in the first wave of set photos) to rebuff the latest ghostly invasion of the Big Apple. Our money’s on the ladies.

Still no word on whether any of the original cast will cameo in the new film, but Dan Aykroyd, who is a producer on the new version, teased a connection between the films.

“It refers to the first two [films] in a really neat, classy way, but this is all going to introduce them to a whole new generation of girls that are going to want to be Ghostbusters. We always needed them,” he tells Spinoff Online.

“The new one’s going to be big! The interplay, and with each of them, their individual voices are so well defined. They’re just such different characters, and there’s a friction. There’s a dynamic there. I’m not going to spoil it for people, but it’s going to be big, big!”

Writer-director Paul Feig took to Twitter Wednesday to announce the start of production

The new quartet of ghostbusters will be joined by Chris Hemsworth, who’s playing the World’s Sexiest Secretary. The film is set for release on July 22, 2016.
