The British actor takes on the role of the famous cryptographer who helped crack the Nazi "Enigma" codes from Bletchley Park during WW2. The codebreaker's work was credited with helping to shorten the duration of the war.

The first official photo, depicting Cumberbatch as Turing beside his famous bombe machine, was released on the same day that the computer pioneer was granted a posthumous royal pardon.

Turing was convicted in 1952 for homosexuality and punished by being chemically castrated. He lost his security clearance and was no longer able continue working on his code-breaking work for the government.

Turing died in June 1954 from cyanide poisoning, with an inquest concluding that he had committed suicide.

'The Imitation Game' based on the biography 'Alan Turing: The Enigma' by Andrew Hodges also stars Matthew Goode, Keira Knightley, and Mark Strong.

The film, directed by Morten Tyldum, is coming to cinemas in 2014.
