First trailer for Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth's Mad Max spin-off Furiosa
Furiosa minor spoilers follow.
Anya Taylor-Joy and an unrecognisable Chris Hemsworth rage across the fury road in the first trailer for Mad Max spin-off movie Furiosa.
The clip debuted late Thursday (November 30) during a panel for the long-awaited movie at the annual CCXP convention in São Paulo, Brazil, where the official title was revealed — Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
The post-apocalyptic action movie serves as both a prequel and spin-off of the Mad Max franchise, telling the origin story of the title character first played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road.
The Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the character as she is nabbed from the Green Place of Many Mothers by a biker gang run by the Warlord Dementus.
Hemsworth has undergone quite a physical transformation to play the intimidating Dementus.
Furiosa finds herself facing enemies on all sides as she mounts a daring escape plan to get back to the Wasteland by any means necessary.
The trailer also hints at the way Fury Road villain Immortan Joe fits into the prequel, as fans will know he has a crucial role in Furiosa's backstory.
The Lazarus Project's Tom Burke, Insidious' Angus Sampson and The Punisher actor Daniel Webber also appear in major roles.
Legendary Mad Max director George Miller is back for this latest chapter, which was filmed in New South Wales in Australia.
Theron had originally been linked to a Furiosa project following the release of Fury Road, though Miller ultimately chose to recast the role for a prequel story.
The Oscar winner responded to the role being recast by admitting it was a "tough one to swallow" to see someone else playing Furiosa.
"Listen, I fully respect George, if not more so in the aftermath of making Fury Road with him. He's a master, and I wish him nothing but the best," she told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Yeah, it's a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character, and I'm so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly."
Chris Hemsworth has also admitted he was nervous to join the Mad Max franchise even after being a part of films in the Marvel and Ghostbusters universes.
"In the buildup, and I'm talking a couple years, I was scared out of my mind. I'm like, 'I'm gonna derail one of the most iconic franchises'," he told the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "I'm gonna bring down Mad Max. It's gonna be my fault."
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be released on May 24, 2024.
