First trailer for Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy's The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

The first trailer for Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy's new movie The Electrical Life of Louis Wain has made its debut.

The biopic follows the story of the titular artist, played by the Doctor Strange actor, who became renowned for his portraits of cats.

The Crown's Foy plays the love of his life, Emily Richardson, with the trailer showcasing their blossoming relationship as Wain's cat pictures become a phenomenon. However, we also begin to see his mental decline.

"I think you're the first person to see that cats are ridiculous, and frightened, and brave… like us," Emily tells him, revealing his work captures "beauty" amid the world's darkness.

The clip also showcases some familiar faces popping up, including Thor's Taika Waititi and musician Nick Cave, while Foy's The Crown successor Olivia Colman is set to provide the narration.

The movie's official synopsis reads: "The extraordinary true story of eccentric British artist Louis Wain, whose playful, sometimes even psychedelic pictures helped to transform the public's perception of cats forever.

"Moving from the late 1800s through to the 1930s, we follow the incredible adventures of this inspiring, unsung hero, as he seeks to unlock the 'electrical' mysteries of the world and, in so doing, to better understand his own life and the profound love he shared with his wife Emily Richardson."

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain boasts an impressive wider cast including Loki's Sophia di Martino, Sex Education's Aimee Lou Wood, The Death of Stalin's Andrea Riseborough, Captain America's Toby Jones and The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade.

People Just Do Nothing's Asim Chaudhry, The Mighty Boosh's Julian Barratt, Back to Life's Adeel Akhtar, Dumbo's Sharon Rooney, I, Daniel Blake's Hayley Squires, Vox Lux's Stacy Martin and The Elephant Man's Phoebe Nicholls also star.

Flowers' Will Sharpe directed the movie and co-wrote the screenplay with Paddington 2's Simon Stephenson.

The Electric Life of Louis Wain will have a limited US cinema release in October this year and will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video starting from November 5. In the UK, the film will be distributed in cinemas in early 2022.
