Written and directed by Wheatley – who directed recent Netflix movie Rebecca – In The Earth feels a bit like the terrifying lovechild of The Blair Witch Project and Contagion, so fans might need a big bag of popcorn to hide behind when it opens.
The thriller is currently scheduled for release in US cinemas next month, and is hoping to arrive in UK cinemas this summer, all being well.
The official synopsis for In The Earth reveals a surprisingly timely premise. "As the world searches for a cure to a disastrous virus, a scientist and park scout venture deep in the forest for a routine equipment run," it teases.
"Through the night, their journey becomes a terrifying voyage through the heart of darkness, the forest coming to life around them."
Billed as an "atmospheric" horror, Wheatley's latest title stars Joel Fry, Reece Shearsmith, I, Daniel Blake's Hayley Squires, Midsommar's Ellora Torchia, Mark Monero, and John Hollingworth.
It's also likely to put us off camping in the woods for life.
In The Earth is scheduled for release in US cinemas on April 23 and in UK cinemas on June 18.
