Hellboy: The Crooked Man's first teaser trailer has been unveiled.

The prequel sees Deadpool 2's Jack Kesy in the lead role, as he's stranded in 1950s Appalachia with a rookie agent from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence (BPRD).

Together, they discover a small community terrorised by the Crooked Man, a devil with a connection to Hellboy's past.

The trailer begins against the eerie backdrop of a rural forest. As birds caw, various spooky figures are seen lurking around, with a voiceover from Hellboy declaring: "Something in these hills. Something haunted. Evil. "It smells like death."

The trailer is filled with sinister creatures, thick flames and gunshots, while the lore of the Crooked Man is revealed by local residents.

"All your friends... They all gonna die," one character ominously states as the teaser comes to an end.

Directed by Brian Taylor, The Crooked Man is adapted from Mike Mignola and Richard Corben's 2008 comic book miniseries. The script was written by Mignola and fellow comics writer Christopher Golden.

It was announced last year that Kesy would be playing a younger version of the iconic character, who has been portrayed by David Harbour and Ron Perlman in the past.

Perlman starred in Guillermo del Toro's original Hellboy movie (2004) and its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). Harbour later stepped into the role for Neil Marshall's 2019 reboot.

Reflecting on his movie's poor reception in an Instagram Stories Q&A, Harbour claimed that "it failed before we began shooting".

He explained: "Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman created this iconic thing that we thought could be reinvented and then they certainly – the loudness of the internet was like, 'We do not want you to touch this'.

"And then we made a movie that I think is fun and I think had its problems but was a fun movie, and then people were just very very against it and that's people's right, but I learned my lesson in a lot of different ways."
