First trailer for Jack Whitehall's new sci-fi rom-com from Borat writer

Jack Whitehall's new sci-fi rom-com from Borat writer Anthony Hines has released its first trailer.

Starring Divergent's Shailene Woodley opposite Whitehall, Robots tells the story of a womaniser and gold-digger who, when forced to team up and pursue robot doubles of themselves, learn about humanity.

As we see in the trailer, Whitehall's Charles meets Woodley's Elaine when they accidentally collide at an ice rink.

When Elaine and Charles arrange to meet, their illegal robot doubles meet up for a date and decide to run away with each other.

"This is terrible, they've completely stolen our lives," Elaine says to Charles when they discover the robots have taken over their social media accounts.

Hatching a plan over a latte to stop the imposters once and for all, Charles and Elaine decide the only way to stop them is to murder them.

"We hunt them down and we kill them," Charles tells Elaine.

In one notable moment from the trailer, Charles and Elaine disable their doppelgangers during a sex scene in a motel and proceed to throw the imposters off a cliff.

Based on a short story by Robert Sheckley, Robots will be co-directed by Anthony Hines, the long-time creative partner of Sacha Baron Cohen, and Klown's Casper Christensen.

American Horror Story star Emma Roberts was initially cast in the role of Elaine but was later replaced by Woodley.

Speaking of the casting news in 2021, Hines said he was "delighted" to have Woodley and Whitehall on board.

"At a time when comedies are needed more than ever, I couldn't be more delighted than to have Shailene and Jack team up to play the leads in this movie," Hines said.

As announced in the trailer, Robots will be released on May 19.
