The first trailer for Jeffrey Wright's critically acclaimed film American Fiction has been released.

The film, which debuted at 100% on review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, is based on Percival Everett's 2001 novel Erasure.

It stars Wright as novelist Monk, who is frustrated with a system that only allows Black entertainment to flourish if it is littered with clichés.

Directed by The Good Place's Cord Jefferson, American Fiction's plot sees Monk give into societal pressure to write a 'stereotypically Black' book which becomes hugely succesful, inadvertently centring himself in the establishment he detests – and the first trailer has given us a good look at the satirical comedy that follows.

"Monk, your books are good," Monk's literary agent (John Ortiz) tells him at the start of the trailer. "But they're just not popular. Editors; they want a Black book."

The snippet of the film then takes viewers on a journey of Monk's attempt to subvert the system; "Look at what they publish. Look at what they expect us to write. I just wanna rub their nose in it."

Upon renaming his novel My Pafology instead of My Pathology, Monk sells his book – and the film is sent into a tailspin when Monk pretends that the book, which contains "dead beat dads, rappers, crack," is based on his actual life.

A release date for American Fiction is yet to be announced.
