Yahoo Movies First trailer for LaKeith Stanfield’s new movie The Book of Clarence
The Book of Clarence, starring LaKeith Stanfield, has released its first trailer.
The film, which is directed by Jeymes Samuel, reunites Samuel with Stanfield after the two worked together on The Harder They Fall. This time, however, Stanfield takes centre stage and stars as the titular Clarence.
The story follows Clarence, a struggling Jersusalemite, who tries to gain fame in 29 A.D and convince people he is the new Messiah. Doing so for only personal gain, his quest will take him on an exploration of faith and celebrity.

The Book of Clarence also stars X-Men actor James McAvoy, Alfre Woodard, David Oyelowo, Empire of Light star Michael Ward, House of the Dragon actor Tom Glynn-Carney, Stranger Things' Caleb McLaughlin, and Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch.
Speaking about the film to Vanity Fair, Samuel said: "I wanted to tell a Bible story about an everyman. I always wanted to explore the Bible stories, but from the angle of the person that sells Jesus his sandals, the woman or man that owns the hair salon.
"Clarence is a person that doesn’t believe in anything outside of what’s in front of him, what he can see and hear."

He continued: "Clarence has a lot of inside belief – he has a lot of inside confidence. This man is sure he could fly. He reminds me of me growing up, but unlike me, he has no outside faith. I think it’s just a really interesting vantage point to explore living in that particular time and place, where most everyone around him is speaking about the Messiah."
Jay-Z, who acts as a producer on The Book of Clarence, added that though the story uses religion as a "backdrop", the film is more "about a young man who finds his faith through love and through wanting to become somebody in the world, which is the story of everybody".
The Book of Clarence will be released in cinemas on January 19 2024.
