The first trailer for X-Men star James McAvoy's horror movie Speak No Evil has landed.

During Universal and Focus's presentation at CinemaCon on Wednesday (April 10), horror fans got the first look at a remake of the 2022 Danish movie Gæsterne.

This English-language version takes place at an idyllic country house, where a family have been invited to spend the weekend after meeting another couple on holiday.

However, this weekend getaway eventually turns into a hellish nightmare as it becomes increasingly obvious their volatile host (McAvoy) has deadly plans for them.

Speak No Evil has been adapted in English by writer-director James Watkins, who previously worked on Daniel Radcliffe's Hammer horror The Woman in Black and Black Mirror's notable episode 'Shut Up and Dance'.

The sparse supporting cast for the Speak No Evil remake includes Mackenzie Davis (Happiest Season), Alix West Lefler (Riverdale) and Scoot McNairy (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).

Speak No Evil was originally meant to be released this August, but a production delay caused by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes pushed back the opening by a month.

James McAvoy is no stranger to playing horror villains, having portrayed the monstrous Kevin Wendell Crumb in the M Night Shyamalan films Split and Glass.

He had a more heroic role as the adult version of Bill Denbrough in It Chapter Two and starred in the science fiction horror movie Victor Frankenstein.

Next up for the actor is a step behind the camera as he makes his feature directorial debut with the true story of two Scottish friends who duped the entire music industry with their rap act.

Speak No Evil will be released in cinemas on September 13, 2024.
