The first trailer for Saoirse Ronan and Paapa Essiedu’s new movie The Outrun has been released.

The upcoming film is based on Amy Liptrot's acclaimed 2015 memoir about addiction, focusing on Ronan's character Rona as she returns to the Orkney Islands after a decade.

"Sober but lonely, she tries to suppress her memory of the events which set her on this journey of recovery," the synopsis reads.

"Slowly the beauty and lore of the land enters her inner world and – one day at a time – Rona finds hope and strength in herself among the heavy gales and the bracingly cold sea."

In the first trailer, we get a sense of Rona's struggles as she declares: "The urge to drink can come out of nowhere. You think you're doing well, and suddenly you want nothing more than a drink."

She then returns to the Orkney Islands as we get a sense of familial tensions, while Rona also attends an AA meeting and admits her struggles with addiction.

"It never gets easy, it just gets less hard," she is told at one point.

The Outrun comes from director Nora Fingscheidt, and alongside Ronan and I May Destroy You's Paapa Essiedu the cast also includes Game of Thrones' Stephen Dillane and Slow Horses' Saskia Reeves.

The film previously premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it drew critical acclaim, notably for Ronan's performance.

Liptrot's original memoir follows her journey back to the Orkney Islands to recover, and won numerous prizes including the 2016 Wainwright Prize and the 2017 PEN Ackerley Prize.

The Outrun is set to be released in UK and Irish cinemas on Friday, September 27.
