The Flash disappoints with soft box office debut

The Flash has disappointed with its performance at the box office, with the latest feature in the Worlds of DC series earning below expectations.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Andy Muschietti’s superhero film has accrued $55.1 million across the course of its opening weekend, below its projected gross of $70 million.

The studio had hoped for a return to form following the restructuring of the company last year, but the total for The Flash doesn’t match the performance of Black Adam ($67 million), which was considered a commercial failure.

Black Adam grossed $393.3 million worldwide during its run, whilst fellow DC film Shazam! Fury of the Gods completely bombed with a total of $133.5, meaning The Flash has some work to do to recoup some money for the studio.

The film, which stars Ezra Miller in the lead role, follows Barry Allen as he travels back in time to prevent the death of his mother, with the ensuing events causing a split in the multiverse. Michael Keaton and Michael Shannon reprise their roles as Batman and General Zod respectively, whilst Sasha Calle plays Supergirl.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, producer Barbara Muschietti spoke about Keaton playing the Caped Crusader once more, describing it as “magical.”

“It was amazing. It was almost religious,” she said. “The crew is always talking and chatting, and we were in the Batcave, the ADs told us he was walking in and you could hear a pin drop.

“It was completely quiet and I still get chills from seeing him just going up the tower in full regalia and just standing there. It was magical. I think it was magical for him too.

“Absolutely. It was fantastic, but obviously I'm a player in all of this and I have to be very focused,” added her brother Andy, who helmed the It franchise. “Forgive me if I wasn't flying around in awe, which I was.”

The Flash is in cinemas now.
