Flat Earthers have a great theory about why no one has fallen off the edge

In case you don’t believe that a lot of people really, genuinely believe that the Earth is flat, just head on over to YouTube and search, ‘Flat Earth’.

Then listen for the sound of your jaw hitting the floor as thousands of ‘documentaries’ proving the Earth is flat pop up.

One of the ‘big’ subjects in Flat Earth theory is the eternal question – why has no one fallen off the edge? But a Flat Earth forum poster may have solved it, IFLScience reports.

The post, by Varaug, claims that Earth might, in fact, be a doughnut shape, and we’re walking around inside the doughnut.

Varaug wrote, ‘Logically, it is possible for a torus-shaped planet to form, so we cannot rule out the possibility that the Earth is shaped like a torus, and therefore the hypothesis must be considered as a potential model.

Varaug claims that the reason we’re not seeing the other side of the doughnut is that light bends around the curve of the doughnut.

He even has an explanation for why there’s night and day, ‘Lay a torch horizontal on a table and turn it on. Now, get a donut and place it on its side, with the hole perpendicular to the torch. The side that is illuminated by the torch is in day. Over 24 hours, the donut performs one complete revolution. Spin it halfway around, this signifies the passing of 12 hours. Now, the side that WAS in day, is facing away from the torch and is in night. The side that WAS in night, is now facing the torch and is in day.’

It’s not QUITE as out-there as another explanation proposed by Flat Earthers at a conference this year – that Earth actually ‘wraps around’ like a maze in Pac-Man.

Darren Nesbit says that this explains why people can travel continuously East to West without meeting a ‘wall’.

Nesbit says, ‘We know that continuous east-west travel is a reality. One logical possibility for those who are truly free thinkers is that space-time wraps around and we get a Pac-Man effect.’

Many Flat Earthers claim that there’s a huge ‘ice wall’ around the world, with the North Pole at its centre – but that’s clearly not far out for some of the ‘true free thinkers’.

Former England cricketer ‘Freddie’ Flintoff revealed last year that he was obsessed with a podcast called the Flat Earthers – and coming round to their ideas.

Flintoff described the ‘ice wall’ theory, saying, ‘The middle is the North Pole, around the outside is the South Pole which is like a big wall of ice. This is why all governments now have bases on the South Pole.’

Flintoff said, ‘If you’re in a helicopter and you hover why does the Earth not come to you if it’s round?

‘Why, if we’re hurtling through space, why would water stay still? Why is it not wobbling? Also if you fire a laser about 16 miles, if the world was curved, you shouldn’t be able to see it but you can.’
