Fox News Vs Captain America: Right Wing Network Defends Villains

Fox News loves America. If one of their reporters was ever to say otherwise they would be fired on the spot, but something strange occurred over the weekend when Fox News took on Captain America himself.

The hosts of a ‘Fox & Friends’ segment on Saturday (17 October) took exception to a recent storyline that saw Cap take on an armed militia wanting to stop illegal immigration.

“He’s got a new, odd enemy,” said co-host Clayton Morris (you can watch the video here). “Instead of going against Hydra and the typical Captain America villains, he’s going up against conservatives. That’s his new enemy.”

The story is told in 'Captain America: Sam Wilson #1’ the first issue in a comic line under Marvel’s rebooted All New, All Different continuity. In it, Sam Wilson, previously known as The Falcon, continues in the role of Captain America - a mantle the character assumed in 2014.

The conservative militia Cap takes on call themselves the Sons of the Serpent. Their leader Supreme Serpent, says in the issue: “Attention all trespassers, by invading this sovereign land, you defy the laws of God, nature, and the United States Constitution. Therefore, I hereby apprehend you by the power vested in me by the aforementioned God, nature, et cetera, et cetera.”

Host Tucker Carlson says: “So who is this Serpent? Is this Serpent an Islamic extremist, an ISIS member bent on destroying Western civilization? No. The Serpent is an American who has misgivings about unlimited immigration and the costs associated with it. That, according to the comic book, is evil.”

Carlson continues by saying that Marvel are portraying ordinary Americans as “snake-handling bigots and they need to be held in place or else they’ll turn this country into Nazi Germany. It’s like, the people who run this country, a lot of them actually believe that. I live near them. They really think that.”

Fox were also quick to make note of Captain America’s race, despite it having nothing to do with the story that followed.

The issue was written by Nick Spencer and illustrated by Daniel Acuna. On Twitter Spencer said: “More than anything I’m just amazed how certain media coverage of 'Sam Wilson: Captain America #1’ directly mirrors what we showed in the book.”

Host Health Childers also chips in, saying: “They should do a comic book on the opposite. The people who are working the border to keep us safe.“

She later adds, "Keep politics out of comic books,” showcasing a lack of basic comic book knowledge about even the character she’s talking about. Captain America was created during World War 2 as pro-American propaganda. That’s political. Were it not for politics (which always has and always will be part of every medium of entertainment) there would be no Captain America in the first place.
