Frank Grillo Talks The Purge 3

A third installment in dystopian action-horror series ‘The Purge’ has been confirmed, with ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ leading man Frank Grillo returning - and the grizzled action man with the extraordinarily manly name has been talking about it.

In some respects it’s a surprise that the third ‘Purge’ movie would choose to directly follow on from the second. No actors from the 2013 original (which starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Heady) returned for the 2014 sequel, the common thread instead being the scenario of a seemingly idyllic, crime-free society which is maintained by legalising all criminal activity for one night of every year.

Where the first was set in a suburban house, the sequel went out into the city streets, and it had seemed likely that any third film would again follow a whole new group of characters in a different environment.

However, Universal and production companies Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes clearly recognised that Grillo (known to Marvel fans as ’Captain America’ villain Crossbones) is pretty good at dishing out vengeance, and decided to bring him back.

Grillo revealed to Slashfilm that, while he too had assumed ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ would be a one-and-done deal for him, he agreed to return for before returning writer-director James DeMonaco had even written the third installment.

“They didn’t have a script… They just called and said, ‘Would you be interested if we had a great script?’ DeMonaco called and said, ‘If it’s with you, I’ll do it.’

“He and Universal came up with this, he’s wonderful at this. He wrote a script. I didn’t think it would be better but I think it’s better than the second one.”

Speaking to Collider, Grillo shed a little more light on what the third film will be about, indicating that it will see him progress from street level revenge to taking on the powers that be, The New Founding Fathers of America, as well as delving into the history of his character Leo Barnes:

“You get to see where he came from, his origin, how this has affected him, and what he does to make some changes about it. He was involved in law enforcement at a high level, and he gets involved with somebody else who’s also politically charged, and they go after the system.

“It’s really interesting. It’s like a really good old school B-movie, like ‘Death Wish,’ or one of those Clint Eastwood westerns. It’s that kind of thing.”

Shooting this autumn in Rhode Island, the as-yet untitled third ‘Purge’ is due to hit cinemas in July 2016.
