‘Frozen’ Beats ‘Lion King’s’ Record of Most Weeks at No. 1 on U.S. Album Chart

It’s no fairy tale: Disney’s “Frozen” has broken the record for the most number of weeks atop the U.S. album chart by the soundtrack for an animated picture.

The album logged its 11th non-consecutive week at No. 1 with sales of 259,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan data for the week ending April 20. A combination of factors — Easter week, availability at Starbucks outlets, a still-hot home video release – lifted the title to its biggest sales frame since its release last November.

“Frozen” leapfrogged another Disney title, “The Lion King,” in the record book. That hit animated tuner logged 10 weeks at No. 1 in 1994-95.

The No. 1 title nearly quadrupled the sales of “Testimony” (Island Def Jam), the No. 2 debut by New Orleans hip-hop artist August Alsina, which placed with 67,000 units sold. The 22-year-old performer’s full-length bow features appearances by Rick Ross, B.o.B., Yo Gotti and Pusha T.

Three other titles made their first appearance in the top five. Needtobreathe’s “Rivers in the Wasteland” (Atlantic) arrived at No. 3 with a 49,000-unit week. The South Carolina alternative act took No. 6 with its 2011 set “The Reckoning.”

Pop singer Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty” (Warner Bros.) took No. 4 with a 44,000-unit stanza. The vocalist’s self-titled 2010 debut topped out at No. 11.

Singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson’s “Lights Out” (Mom & Pop) moved in at No. 5, shifting 37,000. The title matched the peak of the singer’s 2012 set “Human Again.”

Wrapping up the week’s top 10 were Luke Bryan’s “Crash My Party” (No. 6, 33,000 sold, up 77%), Pharrell’s “G I R L” (No. 7, 33,000, up 12%), Lorde’s “Pure Heroine” (No. 8, 26,000, up 62%), 5 Seconds of Summer’s “She Looks So Perfect” (No. 9, 26,000, flat) and the “Now 49” compilation (No. 10, 22,000, up 45%). Several of the titles benefited from iTunes’ Easter-week sale pricing.
