'Frozen' continues to charm, amuse and enthral audiences across the world, but some Disney fans are apoplectic after a US blogger accused the film of possessing the studio's first ever gay character.
Kathryn Skaggs wrote a blog post for A Well Behaved Mormon Woman that suggested Elsa, one of 'Frozen's' main protagonists who is voiced by Idina Menzel, symbolises homosexuality because her powers are hidden from public, unaccepted by her mother and father and are also repressed and feared.
While it's also been theorised that Oaken, the owner of Wandering Oaken's Trading Post and Sauna who Anna encounters on her travels might not only be Disney's first ever homosexual character but could be its first depiction of a gay parent too.
This is because after Kristen Bell's Anna is introduced to his "family," it then shows another man in a sauna with four children.
The Big Issue has now asked Jennifer Lee, the film's writer and co-director, if Oaken was intended to be gay, and while she didn't go as far as to confirmed his sexual orientation she has hinted that they knew exactly what they were doing.
"We know what we made," Lee stated. "But at the same time I feel like once we hand the film over, it belongs to the world. So I don't like to say anything, and just let the fans talk. I think it's up to them."
Lee's statement is the perfect way to appease those who are vexed with 'Frozen's' apparently homosexual agenda, while also basically confirming to more liberal minded folk exactly what they already thought.
However, one of the glorious elements of cinema is the fact that moviegoers can interpret film's whichever way they want to. If some viewers want to be believe that Oaken is in a loving partnership with his unnamed life-partner and their four children; then that's fine.
And then if others want to think that Oaken and his pal simply like to spend their time in a sauna with four kids then that's OK too. But if you actually think that the latter is true then you're a bit deluded.
Do you think 'Frozen's' Oaken was gay?
