Dunkirk: Main trailer for Christopher Nolan's WWII epic arrives

The full trailer for ‘Dunkirk’ is here – and, as anticipated, it promises something epic, dramatic and powerful.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan (‘Interstellar,’ the ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy), the film is based on the true story of Operation Dynamo, which saw the evacuation of over 300,000 stranded Allied soldiers from the beach of Dunkirk, France in May 1940 – utilising both military and civilian vessels.

History may refer to the event as ‘the miracle of Dunkirk’ – but based on the trailer above, this certainly doesn’t mean that Nolan and company will spare us the horrors of warfare.

That said, as the film has been passed PG-13 in the US (it has not been certified by the BBFC at present), this won’t necessarily be another ‘Saving Private Ryan’ in terms of graphic violence.

Nolan has brought together an illustrious ensemble, including Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy (both of whom previously worked with the director on ‘Inception’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ films), ‘Bridge of Spies’ Oscar-winner Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, newcomer Fionn Whitehead, and singer Harry Styles in his film debut.

We can expect this compelling, inspirational story to be conveyed in a suitably large-scale fashion, as it has been shot on a combination of IMAX and 65mm film.

‘Dunkirk’ opens in UK cinemas 21 July.
