Gambit Director Quit Due To Creative Differences?

It looks as though details of Rupert Wyatt’s ‘Gambit’ exit have begun to surface… and it’s all because of creative differences.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 43-year-old British filmmaker may have clashed with the studio about his vision for ‘Gambit’… and was unwilling to compromise.

“What seems to have happened on Gambit and other films is that when Wyatt has been unable to convince the studios to sign on to his vision, his anxiety mounts and he leaves,” they revealed. “During the past few years, he has dropped out of projects at every major studio except Disney (where he has had none).”

Of course, the official reason for Wyatt’s exit was kept quiet… but was previously thought to be down to scheduling conflicts with another upcoming project.

“Multiple sources say the real split arose after the studio began to question whether Wyatt was in fact committed to moving ahead on the project, which has an Oct. 7, 2016, release date. Says one high-level source with knowledge of the situation: ‘Ambivalence is not a good way to go into an expensive movie’.”

Rupert Wyatt rose to fame after his debut movie, ‘The Escapist’, turned heads amongst studio execs… and he was soon pursued to head up the critically acclaimed sci-fi flick, ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’.

But since then, Wyatt has stepped in and out of various projects.

Over the last few years, he’s been linked to the ‘Planet of the Apes’ sequel (which he later pulled out from) as well as futuristic thriller ‘Agent 13’ and Denzel Washington’s stint as ‘The Equalizer’.

Unfortunately, it looks as though a difference in creative vision is a big factor on Wyatt’s decisions to pull out of these projects – including ‘Gambit’. But rather than clashing with the studios on a catastrophic level, it seems to be anxiety and the amount of creative freedom he has which informs his decision.

“One top exec who has worked with Wyatt says the director ‘is not a tortured guy’ but rather is ‘a very gentle soul, very considerate… I think he’s a very principled guy. He wants to make the best version of something, and he’s so desperately afraid of making something not good that it’s easier to walk away than be pushed by committee’.”

Either way, it seems that Rupert Wyatt won’t be leading the ‘Gambit’ solo movie.

‘Gambit’ heads to cinemas on 7 October 2016.
