Gambit Is A Sexy Heist Movie, Says Producer

Producer Simon Kinberg says we can expect a “sexy thriller’ and a ‘heist movie’ from the ‘X-Men’ spin-off ‘Gambit’ - once the film finally gets off the ground, that is.

Originally set to be in production by now with Rupert Wyatt directing and Channing Tatum in the title role, the film hit a significant stumbling block when Wyatt parted ways with the producers over creative differences.

However, despite its troubles Tatum remains attached to star, Doug Liman looks set to take over as director - and, though the film looks highly unlikely to meet its scheduled October 2016 release date, Kinberg tells Collider the film’s future looks bright. He also gives some indication of how ‘Gambit’ will stand apart from the existing X-movies, including the upcoming ‘Deadpool.’

“I mean ‘Deadpool’ obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline ‘X-Men’ movies. The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas ‘Deadpool’ is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways.

“And ‘Gambit’ will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way.”

Kinberg does not confirm that Liman is in, but does mention that “somebody we’re excited about” looks set to direct, and that “we hope to start shooting next spring,” which surely means ‘Gambit’ won’t hit screens any sooner than 2017.

‘Spectre’ actress Lea Seydoux also looks set to appear, but remains unconfirmed.

Even so, 2016 remains a big year for 20th Century Fox’s mini-Marvel universe, with ‘Deadpool’ hitting screens in February and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ following in May.
