Game of Thrones fans a pretty serious about this whole re-making season eight of the HBO fantasy show, but 'with competent writers'.

A petition that was launched this week by one disgruntled viewer is surging towards its target of one million signatures.

Last night, it was rounding on 500,000, and this morning – at the time of writing – it has almost 750,000 signatures, making one million a pretty strong likelihood.

A campaigner called 'Dylan D' is behind the petition, naming and shaming the show's writers David Benioff and Dan Weiss in the campaign's blurb.

“David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on,” he writes.

“This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”

While that's staggeringly unlikely, even if the petition were to gain a billion signatures, it throws into the spotlight just how angry some are at how the show has developed in its final series.

Many reckoned that the rot began to set in after Benioff and Weiss's show overtook novel write George R.R. Martin's books.

Martin has two more books in his Song of Ice and Fire series, on which Game of Thrones is based, to write, but reportedly sat down with Benioff and Weiss to brief them on where the plot is to end up.

But critics and viewers have become frustrated with the pace and plausibility of series seven and eight, which have felt rushed, and have dealt with certain plot strands carelessly.

Fans are also furious that Daenerys, played by Emilia Clarke, has become 'the mad queen', after being rejected by Jon Snow and having been stripped of her support network by the show's plotting.

Game of Thrones airs its final episode on Sunday night in the US, and in the early hours of Monday morning in the UK.
