The ten-episode series will arrive in the UK and North America simultaneously and each instalment will be made available here at the same time as the US premiere each week, and on demand thereafter.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series tells the story of House Targaryen. It stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel, and Rhys Ifans.
Their descendant Daenerys Targaryen was a major character in the main series, with Emilia Clarke in the role.
Zai Bennett, Managing Director of Content, Sky UK, said: “House of the Dragon is one of the most highly anticipated shows of the year and it showcases Sky’s commitment to providing exciting, world-class content for our customers.
If you loved Game of Thrones or are a first timer to the world of Westeros, this is going to be a must watch. Roll on Monday 22 August.”
The Doctor Who star plays Prince Daemon Targaryen in the new series and admitted that while he hasn't even seen the show himself, he is expecting it to have a style all of its own.
"I think it's really different to the original series, to be honest with you," he said.
"I mean it has to be. The original series was its own thing and it was, it was so brilliant and, and sort of left a mark in a way that it would be impossible to repeat. So, I don't know."
