Gary Oldman: ‘I’m Still The Highest Grossing Actor Ever’

Gary Oldman thinks he is still the highest grossing actor of all time.

Yahoo Movies chatted to the actor, currently promoting ‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’ and asked him whether he knew he was top of the heap.

“I think I am,” said the star. “By sheer luck.”

The accolade was bestowed on the 56-year-old by the Hollywood Reporter in 2012, thanks to his roles as heroic Sirius Black in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Batman’ saga, in which he played Caped Crusader confidante James Gordon.

“It’s just one of those statistics,” says Oldman. “It doesn’t hurt you, that’s for sure. I was neck and neck with Samuel L Jackson…I think I’ve just overtaken him now because I landed [‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’]. He was ahead of me for a while and I’ve knocked him off the podium.”

Despite a reputation as an ‘actor’s actor’ Oldman has shown up in many of the highest grossing films ever.

He’s in several of the ‘Harry Potter’ films – the most profitable franchise of all time, as well as all three Christopher Nolan ‘Batman’ films – which made more than £2 billion combined.

It must be a close-run thing though. Jackson was in the original ‘Jurassic Park’, as well as playing Nick Fury in various Marvel movies, including ‘The Avengers’, which earned more than £875million at the box office.

He was also Mace Windu in all three ‘Star Wars’ prequels.

Interestingly, Oldman could have shared the spoils of that series – he did a voice audition for ‘Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith’.

The actor is also a staunch believer that Andy Serkis deserves some awards recognition for his motion capture performance as Caesar in the ‘Apes’ movie.

“His contribution is enormous to it,” he admits, “so maybe this time. [The awards’ voters] should acknowledge it.”

‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’ is in cinemas now.
