James Corden would be "so disappointed" if he and Ruth Jones did not write something together again in the future.

Iconic BBC One sitcom 'Gavin and Stacey' is coming to an end on Christmas Day after 17 years with another festive special, but the pair - who created and wrote the show as well as playing Smithy and Nessa - have not ruled out a reunion on a different project.

When asked on the 'Table Manners' podcast if there could one day be a Smithy and Nessa spin-off show, the 46-year-old former talk show host said: "We don't know if we have another idea in us, but I can honestly say that if we didn't attempt to try and even explore the idea of writing together, then I'd be so disappointed."

The 58-year-old actress and comedienne added: "I couldn't bear it. I love being in the room with James, it's so fun."

On writing the fun and kind comedy - that follows the ups and downs of Stacey (Joanna Page) and Gavin Shipman's (Mathew Horne) relationship, James believes the thought of lovebirds not being able to live without each other is "more extraordinary than anything".

He explained: "I think we're led to believe that there's conflict and drama everywhere. Fundamentally, as far as I can work out most people love their friends, most people might not always get on with their families, but they love them, and most people when they're with their families it's a magical, special and treasured time.

"For some reason, it's not always reflected in TV and film but we're influenced and drawn to the same things.

"In the past, people have tried to sound us out to write something, but the idea of us two trying to write a superhero Marvel movie would just be insane.

"What we both fundamentally believe is that there's nothing more incredible than when somebody meets somebody and goes, 'Well I don't think I can live without you and I don't want to see my future without you.'

"That to us is more extraordinary than anything."

'Table Manners' is released weekly and available on podcast streaming platforms.

'Gavin and Stacey: The Finale' airs at 9pm on Christmas Day on BBC One, with it later being available on BBC iPlayer.
