Furiosa director George Miller has confirmed that Mad Max will have a cameo in the upcoming spin-off movie.

The new movie serves as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road and focuses on a younger version of Imperator Furiosa (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) around 15 to 20 years before the events of the 2015 film.

Questions have lingered over whether the titular Max Rockatansky will make an appearance in Furiosa, with Miller now revealing that the character does have a brief cameo.

"In doing what we did in the preparation of Mad Max: Fury Road, we also wrote what happened to Max in the year before we encounter him in [that film]," he told Entertainment Weekly.

"And as we get towards the end of this movie, the chronology... Basically, we had to see that Mad Max was lurking around somewhere because we do know what happened."

Miller went on to tease the possibility of doing a separate project focused on Max in the year before Fury Road.

"The writers know what happened to Mad Max in that year before, and we have a whole story of that, which I would like to do sometime if I get the chance."

Furiosa follows the titular character as she is taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers by a biker gang run by Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth).

The movie is also set to star The Lazarus Project's Tom Burke, Insidious' Angus Sampson and The Punisher's Daniel Webber.

Hemsworth previously said he was terrified to join the franchise, despite being part of major franchises such as Marvel and Ghostbusters.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be released on May 24, 2024.
