Game of Thrones fans who were disappointed by the final series could have got a very different ending if creator George R.R. Martin had had anything to do with it.

The author of fantasy series A Game of Thrones which the cult viewing TV series was based on has said he believes the show could have run for five more series, if TV bosses would only stick to his story.

He complained that decisions about the storyline had been based on ratings for particular characters, rather than being faithful to the story he was trying to tell.

Martin told Fast Company: "It can be... traumatic. Because sometimes their creative vision and your creative vision don't match, and you get the famous creative differences thing - that leads to a lot of conflict.

“The (final) series has been... not completely faithful. Otherwise, it would have to run another five seasons.

"You get totally extraneous things like the studio or the network weighing in, and they have some particular thing that has nothing to do with story, but relates to 'Well this character has a very high Q Rating so let's give him a lot more stuff to do’."

Martin has been vocal with his criticisms of the TV adaptation many times during the series run.

Complaints from fans about the final Game of Thrones series ranged from too much being packed into a short number of episodes, to Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) descent into madness being too quick, and the notorious Night King being vanquished far too easily.

There was also uproar over a bizarre continuity error that saw a rogue coffee cup appear on a table in one scene.

Despite its problems, Game of Thrones had a slew of nominations at the Emmys with 32 nods, and Martin has OK-ed two prequel series, including one about the Targaryens.
