George R.R. Martin hails hot streak on 'Game of Thrones' book 'The Winds of Winter'

George R.R. Martin has hit a rich seam in writing the long-awaited Game of Thrones novel The Winds of Winter, he has said.

Taking to his blog, the writer confirmed that last year was one of his most productive ever, having written 'hundreds and hundreds of pages'.

“The best year I've had on WOW since I began it. Why? I don't know. Maybe the isolation. Or maybe I just got on a roll. Sometimes I do get on a roll,” he explained.

Fans of the series have been eagerly awaiting the latest in the Song of Ice and Fire series, the sixth book, with the last volume, A Dance With Dragons, arriving in 2011.

That book, the longest so far at 1056 pages, took six years to write, but Martin now appears to be on a hot streak.

“I need to keep rolling, though,” he said. “I still have hundreds of more pages to write to bring the novel to a satisfactory conclusion. That's what 2021 is for, I hope.

“I will make no predictions on when I will finish. Every time I do, a**holes on the internet take that as a 'promise,' and then wait eagerly to crucify me when I miss the deadline. All I will say is that I am hopeful.”

Martin became somewhat sidetracked following A Dance With Dragons, publishing a number of novellas and reference books set in his fictional world of Westeros, also home of the hit HBO series, which overtook the books and concluded in 2019.

The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring will be the final two books in the series.

Meanwhile, on TV, production is gearing up for prequel series House of the Dragon, which will explore the Targaryen dynasty.

British actor Paddy Considine will play Viserys Targaryen, alongside Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen.

The series is currently scheduled for a 2022 release.
