Germany’s Studio Babelsberg Celebrates ‘Grand Budapest Hotel’s’ Four Oscar Wins

LONDON — Berlin movie studios and production services company Studio Babelsberg has been celebrating the four Oscar wins for “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

Wes Anderson’s pic, which was co-produced by Babelsberg, won for score for Alexandre Desplat, production design for Adam Stockhausen, costume design for Milena Canonero, and make-up for Frances Hannon and Mark Coulier.

Filming took place entirely in Germany, mainly in Görlitz and other locations in Sachsen, and at Babelsberg. The pic world premiered at the Berlin Film Festival.

The film was supported by the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) and the local film funding institutions Mitteldeutsche Filmförderung, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and MFG Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg.

Christoph Fisser, COO of Studio Babelsberg and an executive producer on the film, said: “These prizes are especially an honor and award for the film production location, Germany. Therefore the congratulations go to the 350 members of the Babelsberg film crew — to the numerous scenery and construction workers, and to the hair and makeup artists, to all film technology companies, the numerous suppliers, to the Ministry of Culture of Germany, and to the German Federal Film Fund, to the local film funding institutions in Berlin-Brandenburg, Saxony and Baden-Wuerttemberg, and to the city of Görlitz, which is now renamed Görliwood. They were all a significant part of the film.”

Carl Woebcken, CEO at Studio Babelsberg and also an executive producer on the film, said: “Films like ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel,’ ‘The Hunger Games’ and Steven Spielberg’s Cold War thriller (which recently wrapped at Babelsberg) show that here in Germany, we are able to work at the highest international standard. The tradition of filmmaking, the excellent handicraft and the various filming locations are the important driving forces why directors want to film in Germany. We can be proud of that.”

The film’s producers were Anderson, Scott Rudin, Steven M. Rales and Jeremy Dawson. Henning Molfenter was an executive producer alongside Fisser and Woebcken.
