Ghost In The Shell Adds Wolverine Actress Rila Fukushima

It looks as though Rila Fukushima has just joined ‘Ghost in the Shell’.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Japanese fashion model and actress has just signed up for the ‘Ghost in the Shell’ remake, starring Scarlett Johansson.

“Rila Fukushima has joined Scarlett Johansson in DreamWorks’ Ghost in the Shell,” they revealed. “Michael Pitt, Juliette Binoche and Takeshi Kitano [join] the DreamWorks project.”

Unfortunately, details of her role have been kept under wraps…

But she’ll be joining an already stellar cast which includes Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi, Michael Pitt as Kuze, and Juliette Binoche as Dr Ouelet.

Of course, Rila Fukushima is best known for starring as the female ninja Yukio in the 2013 X-Men movie, ‘Wolverine’. But she’s also appeared in another comic book role, as Suicide Squad member, Katana in The CW’s hit TV series, ‘Arrow’.

She’s also appeared in ‘Game of Thrones’ as a Priestess of R’hhlor.

‘Ghost in the Shell’ was widely accused of whitewashing its key roles with the addition of several white actors portraying traditionally Japanese characters… but it looks as though the studio may be planning to turn that around.

But with no idea who Fukushima is playing, we’ll have to wait and see.

Rupert Sanders is on board to direct ‘Ghost in the Shell’, based on a script written by Jonathan Herman and Jamie Moss.

‘Ghost in the Shell’ heads to cinemas on 31 March 2017.
