Ghostbusters 2016 Sequel Will Happen

Ain’t afraid of no ghosts? A ‘Ghostbusters’ sequel is coming.

During an interview with The Wrap, Sony Pictures distribution chief Rory Bruer said that a ‘Ghostbusters’ sequel will happen… but it’s not official, yet.

“The ‘Ghostbusters’ world is alive and well,” he explained. “I expect ‘Ghostbusters’ to become an important brand and franchise.”

“While nothing has been officially announced yet,” he added, “there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen.”

‘Ghostbusters’ stars Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Krysten Wiig and Leslie Jones as the all-new Ghostbusters – effectively rebooting the iconic film franchise. But while the film has received a lot of bad press due to its detractors, it looks as though ‘Ghostbusters’ could end up being a win for the studio.

‘Ghostbusters’ grossed an estimated $46 million during its opening weekend… and it currently stands at a worldwide box office gross of $65 million. With a production cost of $144 million, it needs to keep this momentum in order to prove itself at the box office.

Still, it’s the biggest opening film that Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy have made together.

But does this mean that director Paul Feig and his lady Ghostbuster will be back?

Not necessarily…

After all, Sony has been planning an expanded ‘Ghost Busters’ franchise for some time, with reports that Channing Tatum may lead an all-new male Ghostbusting team.

That said, ‘Ghostbusters’ has received generally positive reviews, with an impressive 73 percent on Rotten Tomatoes – especially impressive considering the number of detractors who appeared online in droves.

Could this be the start of a huge new franchise?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But it certainly sounds like it.

‘Ghostbusters’ appeared in cinemas on 11 July 2016.
