Giant hippopotamus climbs to edge of enclosure to watch visitors at zoo

A hippo at the National Zoological Park in New Delhi, India, has been filmed climbing right up to the edge of its enclosure to investigate some visitors in this nerve-wracking clip.

The hippo was kept in an enclosure circled only with a low fence, and clambered up to within touching distance of the visitors on November 11, but remained calm while watching them.

The visitors took photos and can be heard praising the dangerous animal for how calm it was being, before it eventually returned back to its lake.

The filmer commented: "Such a great bond between animals and visitors inside [this] zoo."

The zoo sprawls across a 176-acre site on a 16th-century citadel, on a green island in the middle of the city. It is home to about 1,350 animals representing almost 130 species from around the world. In 2014, a visitor was killed after falling into the white tigers enclosure.
