Gillian Anderson has landed her next role in Tron movie Ares.

The new Disney reboot comes from director Joachim Rønning, and will be the third movie in the series after the original 1982 Tron and 2010's Tron: Legacy.

According to Deadline, the Sex Education and The Crown legend is set to join a star-studded cast that includes Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Sarah Desjardins and Cameron Monaghan.

Tron: Ares follows a sentient programme (played by Leto) who "crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact".

Lee plays the video game programmer and tech CEO, though details on Anderson's and the rest of the cast's characters are unknown for now.

Production on the film, which is written by The Crow's Jesse Wigutow and Enola Holmes' Jack Thorne, has already started according to Rønning, who shared an Instagram post of a director's chair.

"WEEK 1 ON THE GRID #Tron," he captioned the picture.

As well as Tron, Anderson has a busy slate coming up, including Netflix movie Scoop – which will see her play broadcaster Emily Maitlis.

The film focuses on the infamous Newsnight Prince Andrew interview in 2019, giving "the inside track of the women that broke through the Buckingham Palace establishment to secure the scoop of the decade that led to the catastrophic fall from grace of The Queen's 'favourite son'.

"From navigating Palace vetoes, to breaking through to Prince Andrew's inner circle, the high stakes negotiations and intensity of rehearsal – to the jaw-dropping interview itself," the synopsis adds.

Tron: Ares is yet to confirm an official cinema release date.
