Ridley Scott has got a seriously busy schedule at the moment, but lo and behold, the filmmaker has promising news about the long-awaited Gladiator sequel.

Following Connie Nielsen's comments about Gladiator 2 earlier this year, Scott – who's currently preparing for the release of both The Last Duel and House of Gucci – has confirmed that work on the sequel is officially under way.

It's still in its infancy, mind you.

Speaking to Empire about his upcoming slate, the famed director revealed that once his Napoleon Bonaparte movie Kitbag is out of the way, "Gladiator will be ready to go".

"I'm already having Gladiator written now," he added, in an exciting update.

Scott's comments confirm Connie Nielsen's earlier suspicions that the Gladiator sequel is currently "on the ledger". The Wonder Woman actress, who played Lucilla in the 2000 classic, said back in March that Ridley Scott has his attention drawn elsewhere.

"I know that it's on the ledger, so let's just see when Ridley – I know he had to do one or two other movies, and then I think it's on the ledger after that," she teased.

"It would obviously be amazing, and I know that a lot of people want to see more of that. And I think that all of us are just gonna have to look at that as a separate, different film, you know?"

When the Gladiator sequel will finally come out of development, we're not sure, but although there's the possibility of Russell Crowe's hero Maximus Decimus Meridius somehow returning, the actor has hinted it's unlikely.

"If they're having conversations about that, those conversations haven't included me," Crowe said of sequel rumours last year.

"I'm not sure what they have in mind. At all… Can I just say, with a pinch of salt, they have genuinely been having the same conversations since the year 2000."
