Glee's Jane Lynch and Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson have been added to the cast of a new family movie series by Netflix based on the New York Times bestselling book series Ivy & Bean by Annie Barrows.

Joining them are also Pretty Little Liars' Sasha Pieterse, Oscar nominee Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), Garfield Wilson (Snowpiercer), Jaycie Dotin (Big Sky) and Marci T House, reports Deadline.

The story follows two girls who could not be more different: Ivy (Keslee Blalock) is quiet, thoughtful and intellectual while Bean (Madison Skye Validum) is rambunctious, wild and fearless. But an adventure will reveal that opposites attract and bring the two girls together.

Among the previously cast stars for Ivy & Bean is also Good Girls' Lidya Jewett.

The movie series will be directed by Elissa Down, who previously directed Feel the Beat for the streamer. Writing the script are Kathy Waugh, for whom this is the first screenplay, and Jeff Stockwell, who previously wrote other children movies like Disney's A Wrinkle in Time and Bridge to Terabithia.

The series will be made up of one-hour movies, rather than being a TV show, and while the original book series is made up of 12 volumes as of 2021, it's unclear how many movies will comprise the series.

Netflix recently trialled a new way to release movie series with Fear Street, a horror-slasher trilogy that released one movie a week for three weeks.

The series and the weekly schedule proved to be incredibly successful with fans and its open ending meant they might return to the format in the future.

In the meantime, could Netflix be wanting to try the same release pattern on its family audience with Ivy & Bean?

Ivy & Bean is currently filming and does not have a release date yet.
