(Mondadori Portfolio by Getty)Brando - who died in 2004 at age 80 - contributed many of his character's defining traits, and even had a hand in the death scene. "[Brando] said, 'Here's how I play with kids,' and took an orange peel, cut it into pieces that looked like fangs and slipped them into his mouth," Francis Ford Coppola told Playboy.
(Brenda Chase/Online USA)De Niro spent months learning Sicilian to play the younger Vito Corleone, as nearly all of the character's dialogue in the film is in the dialect.

(John Springer Collection/CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images)The actress remains a Hollywood darling and continues to dole out inspiring life us: "Don't take too much time on yourself," she told PEOPLE this week. "Keep looking outward - that's where the amazing part of life is."
(Michael Loccisano/Getty Images for L'Oreal)Duvall was one of four actors - the others were Al Pacino, James Caan and even Marlon Brando - who flew to Coppola's home to do private screen tests for The Godfather.
(Bettmann Archive/Getty)Duvall recently took a critically acclaimed turn opposite another Robert - Downey, Jr. - in 2015's The Judge.
(Jason Merritt/Getty Images)Caan may be the most accomplished Godfather actor offscreen - he spent nine years on the pro rodeo circuit and is a sixth-dan black belt in karate.
(Ron Galella/WireImage)Coincidentally enough, Caan reunited with Godfather costar Talia Shire in both of the pair's most recent films, Con Man and Minkow.
(John Parra/Getty Images for Young Arts Foundation)Pacino's performance as Michael Corleone has since become screen legend, but the studio initially refused to cast him because of his small stature, claiming: "A runt will not play Michael."
(Ron Galella/WireImage)Pacino was one of the five recipients at the 39th annual Kennedy Center Honors in 2016, along with Mavis Staples and others.
